Abstract

In 2017 the UK Government introduced a new test for all year 4 primary pupils, the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC); this became statutory in 2022, (25 ‘rapid fire’ times tables, 6 seconds per question). Professor Field’s concern around likely increased levels of anxiety in children, and lack of training for teachers, prompted pedagogical research at the university which led to the creation of a year-long innovative CPD Programme, focussed on multiplicative reasoning. Between 2018 and 2025 this Programme has reached Mathematics School Leaders across 16 Local Authorities in the UK; in 2024-25 this extended internationally, to include teachers in Switzerland and in deprived areas of South Africa, creating impactful knowledge exchange processes. In this keynote Professor Field will explore the significance, reach and impact of this pedagogical research, and its ongoing development into a REF Impact Case Study.
