Abstract
This edited collection brings together a diverse range of scholarly, practitioner and community perspectives and voices to examine the experiences of Gypsy, Traveller, and Roma communities in relation to higher education in the United Kingdom (UK). Across the different chapters, our contributors explore critical issues such as access and journeys to higher education, participation in university life, representation and diversity, policy and practice issues, curriculum design, as well as impacts and the importance of lived experience. In sum, the chapters help illustrate the progress that has been apparent over the last few years, as well as some of the damaging structural challenges that endure. Although there are hopeful signs of increasing participation in higher education among some Roma, Gypsy, and Traveller communities, this collection illustrates that these ‘wins’ remain tenuous, uneven, and fragile, and are often poorly understood. Within this concluding chapter, we reflect on several key themes that have emerged from the collection including data and visibility; definitions, terminology and diversity; pathways, knowledge and barriers; experience within and outside higher education; partnerships and collaboration; institutional policies and practices; and potential ways forward.
