Abstract

Previous research has raised concerns about the experiences and under-representation of Roma, Gypsies and Travellers in higher education (HE) in the United Kingdom (UK). This includes invisibility in university initiatives and policies which focus on equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) including race equality, widening participation, awarding gaps and decolonising the curriculum. Drawing upon reflections, practice, and research, this book is the first of its kind to solely explore the HE experiences of Traveller, Gypsy and Roma students in the UK. Containing chapters written by a wide range of academics, researchers and teaching staff, employees and volunteers from non-government organisations (NGOs), university professional services staff, graduates and students including those from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities, this book is an important resource for the HE academy, for researchers, policy-makers and academics in HE and for those who are interested in social justice and equality. Moreover, it is hoped that this book will generate discussion and reflection on how Traveller, Gypsy, and Roma students can best be supported to access HE and to have successful and positive experiences whilst at university. This chapter will firstly define terminology before going on to explore census and HE data. The chapter will conclude by outlining the structure of the book.
