Abstract

The Slide Library is a comprehensive collection of presentation resources designed for educators and learners in web design and visual communication. Drawing from chapters of the Design for Web handbook, these slide decks translate complex design concepts into accessible teaching materials suitable for classroom instruction, independent study, and professional reference.

The collection encompasses fourteen presentation decks spanning foundational and advanced topics: web design workflow and collaboration, including file setup, sharing, and version management; classical design principles such as balance, repetition, and proportion; composition techniques including emphasis, asymmetry, and the rule of thirds; colour theory, perception, and practical colour scheme design methods; icon design with historical context and contemporary case studies; CSS background images and texture creation; brand design and cross-media brand consistency; and practical guidance on presenting work and securing design opportunities.

Each deck exists in two formats—optimised for distribution and high-quality for detailed study—facilitating flexible use across different educational contexts. The materials emphasise understanding design principles rather than memorising rules, using real-world examples from recognisable brands and products to ground theoretical concepts in practical application.

All resources are released under Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0, enabling educators to adapt materials for their own teaching contexts whilst maintaining attribution and sharing improvements with the community. Together, these decks form a reusable pedagogical toolkit for design educators and a comprehensive reference resource for students learning web design fundamentals.
