Abstract

Over the last few decades, alternative forms of assessments have become more widely accepted in post-compulsory education. This shift is in response to the shortcomings of traditional assessment, especially when applied to educational contexts facing an increasingly diverse student population and undergoing changes that have emerged during the pandemic. One major benefit highlighted in literature is that testing alternatives are learning opportunities themselves. This presentation discusses two examples of language assessment implemented in two language education settings in higher education: Regent’s University London and the University of Greenwich. These examples illustrate the tenets of alternative forms of assessment, as well as the challenges faced by stakeholders. First, the presentation situates alternative assessment in the contest of language learning testing practices. Alternative assessment can capture authentic performance-based tasks, allow flexibility for diverse intelligences and ways of learning, lessen the stress learners experience in testing settings, and give a more accurate record of their skills and abilities. Second, we shall introduce examples of alternative assessments from both Regent’s University and the University of Greenwich that clearly illustrates several of the affordances previously outlined. Additionally, we shall detail the teacher enquiry process of designing open-ended tasks to engage learners cognitively and effectively as part of a language portfolio working as both formative and summative assessment, that is as assessment of learning and assessment for and as learning. Finally, the presentation discusses the challenges related to reliability, validity, and fairness in language testing. It aims to open a discussion about the sustainability of assessment practices in light of current technological advances.
