Abstract

This talk will present the co-produced knowledge exchange (KE) project, led by the Centre for Chronic Illness at the University of Greenwich (UoG), in collaboration with the Rix Inclusive Research Institute, at the University of East London and purpleSTARS, an arts-based community group involving People with Learning Disabilities (PWLDs). This three-phased knowledge exchange project was funded by the BSG small events grant and the internal UoG participatory action research grant. The project aimed to increase knowledge about healthy living across the lifespan for PWLDs and to increase awareness among healthcare professionals around the needs of PWLDs particularly in relation to accessing services, including routine population screening. In the first phase the KE day "Living well as you get older" in May 2024, the latest information on health check-ups and healthy living choices was exchanged and PWLDs described their often ‘sub-optimal’ experience of health appointments. The second phase, in June 2024, involved the use of arts-based methods to reflect on the ‘healthy ageing’ topics covered during the KE day in May. In hands-on workshops, participants made artefacts using the metaphor of ‘healthy’ plates. The third phase (July 2024) was an interactive and sensory exhibition "Life on a plate", where the artefacts were displayed and visitors invited to engage with our co-researchers, and make their own arts-based ‘Life on a plate.’ The talk will highlight the benefits of co-production and the use of arts-based methods to increase understanding and empowerment, and outline our next steps in this ongoing collaboration.
