Abstract
This qualitative study draws on Foucault’s (2000) concept of heterotopia, which represents cultural, institutional, and complex discursive spaces, often described as a ‘world within a world’. In alignment with Read’s (2023) principles on heterotopia, and the social precarity of academic contracts in Higher Education (HE), the study positions HE as a complex, contested, cultural counter-space characterized by unequal practices in the motivation and promotion of Racially Minoritised Trailblazer’s (RMT’s). The research analyses the learning journeys of four RMTS working in three UK universities as part of a larger research study reflecting self-determination and success among RMTs despite the systemic barriers they regularly encounter in HE. The study makes a significant contribution to the field of motivational theory by proposing a new framework grounded in an evaluation of existing philosophies. Black Academic Trailblazer’s Arc (BATA) Theory, inspired by African-Caribbean collective living, offers an innovative perspective on how RMTs navigate Higher Education spaces. This framework draws on key concepts implemented by the Blackfoot (Siksika) Nation’s community model of Needs (Ravilochan, 2021) in creating the basis for a community model reflecting the needs of RMTs. The research is an exploration of the BATA Theory and contemplates the implications within diverse Higher Education contexts.
