Abstract

Almost overnight, the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated pivots in the MICE industry from face-to-face events to virtual equivalents like Zoom and Teams. Despite their mounting prominence, the boundaries and terminology between different types of virtual events have not been clearly defined in literature. Theoretical misconceptions exist surrounding the diffusion of Virtual Reality (VR) and virtual events into the tourism and hospitality field. Consequently, this study develops a typology of virtual events, integrating the three dimensions of social presence, virtuality, and location to propose a three-dimensional SP-E-L cube; designed to classify current and potential new virtual events. Creating a pragmatic typology provides guidance to researchers and practitioners in developing this emerging research area, involving the charting, understanding, and critical assessment of the independent and dependant variables which underpin emergent theoretical frameworks on the virtual events sub-sector and beyond.
