Abstract
This event consists of two parts. The first half is a walking lecture about the gentrification of Peckham delivered by Dr Charmaine Brown. The second half is a visual response workshop to the walk and talk, led by X. All the outcomes of the workshop will be showcased in the 'Portraits of Peckham: A Black History Month Exhibition’ at Peckham Levels. The Private View of the show will be on Friday, October 13th at 6 pm. This is the first time CCW Outreach (Sharon Brown), CCW FAD (Ayşe Köklü) and a local community activist and a lecturer (Dr Charmaine Brown) come together to organise a practice of critical local orientation for the new cohort of CCW FAD students. This event will not only allow the students to learn about their locality in critical and community-driven ways and grow a sense of belonging, but it will also allow them to gain skills in listening, researching, reflecting and visually responding to new information. PORTRAITS OF PECKHAM is a UAL (University of the Arts) exhibition and workshops based at Peckham Levels during Black History Month, seeking to provide space for the often unseen stories, narratives and histories from the local community of Peckham.
