Abstract

This year-long research took place in nine classrooms, designed and led by Professor Field, working with nine teachers and over sixty year 2 children. Teachers delivered and led Research Gap Tasks with their children, designed by Professor Field, each taking 50 minutes and data was gathered and analysed over the course of one year. This research explores the best ways to introduce the array to young children. It contributes to a gap in research in this area, as the array has been predominately researched in KS2 but not in KS1.
This research has provided evidence that:
The array can provide a strong model for multiplicative reasoning in year 2; the introduction of this model must be planned carefully, avoiding abstract images leading to lack of understanding; clear developmental and experiential links should be made between the ‘group model’ and the ‘array model’ – which needs to be carefully planned in stages, with manipulation between models; numberblocks, and the arrays they form, should be used to support this developmental process.
