Investigations from The Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology, University of Greenwich, has revealed the emerging challenges for the dosing and filling operations, especially for less-free flowing or cohesive bulk particulates. The observation has necessitated the understanding that the core flow discharge is associated with non-flowing regions of material and preferential draw through these regions of static material, whilst mass-flow mobilizes the whole of the vessel content with material flowing against a smooth wall surface. The powder will only draw in sufficient air to bring the void gas pressure into equilibrium with the local environment. The elimination of the need for supplementary aeration techniques means that filling operations can be performed to a greater volumetric efficiency.
