Abstract

The Gentrification and African Presence in Peckham (GAPP) walking tour highlights the spaces occupied by the Caribbean community, 1960-1990. It contextualises the significant educational, recreational, and cultural spaces that shaped Peckham's history over this period, visiting Caribbean/UK heritage landmarks that illuminate the community's history and impact on the economic, social, and cultural capital of Peckham. "A Walk From Time: The Gentrification and African Caribbean Presence in Peckham (GAPP)" walking tour was conducted along Bellenden Road, Peckham on Wednesday 15th April 2026 with Dr Charmaine Brown (founder) and lasted for about 1.5 hours, followed by lunch at Copleston Centre. The GAPP walking tour highlights the spaces occupied by the Caribbean community in Peckham 1960 – 1990, as well as other historical landmarks in Peckham. The tour contextualises the significant educational, recreational and cultural spaces which shaped Peckham’s social, cultural, political and economic history over this period.
