Abstract
Flee project in conversation with Makar Thereshin and Michelangelo Paganopoulos. Panel Discussion and Listening Session. This event is taking place at Tate Modern and not at the Hellenic Centre. Please note that while you have reserved a spot, seating is on a first come, first served basis, and the studio has a limited capacity of 30 guests at a time. Attendees may enter and exit the listening session freely throughout the event. Mount Athos, located in northern Greece, is a unique monastic community and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is home to 20 monasteries and numerous hermitages, inhabited by Orthodox monks who follow a strict ascetic lifestyle. The region is renowned for its stunning natural beauty—rugged mountains, lush forests—and a rich history that dates back over a thousand years. Mount Athos is considered one of the holiest places in Orthodox Christianity, attracting pilgrims from around the world who seek spiritual enlightenment and a deeper connection to their faith. One of Mount Athos’s defining features is its rich tradition of Byzantine chant, which plays a central role in the monastic life and worship of the monks. These chants, characterized by their spiritual depth, are performed during various religious services, creating an atmosphere of reverence and devotion. The music is an integral part of liturgical practices, enhancing the spiritual experience for both the monks and visiting pilgrims. Access to Mount Athos is strictly regulated, with a long-standing prohibition on women entering the territory, known as the «Avaton»—a rule that has been the subject of heated and polarized debates. After conducting field research on Athos, the Swiss art collective FLEE and Makar Tereshin present Athos: Echoes from the Holy Mountain. Focusing on Athonite chants, this transdisciplinary project—centered around a 2xLP album and an art book (in English, Greek, and French)—aims to explore Athos’s past and its living religious and cultural heritage. It invited contemporary artists and researchers to revisit and critically reflect on Athos and what it represents in the 21st century, including the focus on the question of ‘authenticity’ in representation as raised by Dr Michelangelo Paganopoulos following his fieldwork in two rival monasteries of Mount Athos over a period of two years. Flee project will be in conversation with Makar Tereshin and Michelangelo Paganopoulos. The discussion is part of Offprint London. It will be introduced by Dr. Nayia Yiakoumaki and followed by a Q&A session.
