Abstract

This open educational resource provides a comprehensive introduction to Content Management Systems (CMS) for web design students and practitioners. The resource examines fundamental CMS concepts including database-driven content storage, dynamic page generation, and the separation of content from presentation through templating systems. It contextualises CMS development within the broader evolution of web technologies, tracing the shift from static HTML pages to database-backed dynamic websites. The resource explicates core CMS functionality including user authentication, content versioning, and administrative interfaces, whilst addressing practical considerations for CMS selection and deployment. Particular attention is given to WordPress as an exemplar platform, analysing its architecture, extensibility through themes and plugins, and role in contemporary web development practice. The resource serves both pedagogical and professional development purposes, supporting learners in understanding CMS principles and evaluating appropriate solutions for diverse web projects.
