Abstract
This curated resource introduces students and aspiring web designers to the influential figures who have shaped—and continue to shape—the web as we know it. Created as a companion to web design education, the site profiles the pioneers who championed web standards in the early days, the authors whose tutorials and books have taught generations of designers and developers, and the inspiring speakers who challenge our thinking and push the industry forward. It celebrates the experts contributing to W3C standards, the designers generously sharing their creative processes, and the developers building the tools we rely on daily. Rather than attempting an exhaustive directory, the collection reflects a personal, educator's perspective—highlighting the people whose work features in design teaching and whose contributions are regularly recommended to students and colleagues. This intentional curation gives the resource a coherent voice and ensures every profile represents someone whose impact on web practice is demonstrable and significant. The site acknowledges its evolving nature, with ongoing updates as the web community continues to grow and change. An addendum section extends the resource, while a feedback mechanism invites suggestions for new additions and corrections, fostering a collaborative approach to documenting web history. More than a simple directory, People of the Web serves as both reference and inspiration—connecting emerging designers with the shoulders they stand upon and encouraging them to engage with the broader community that makes the web a vibrant, evolving medium. For students beginning their journey in web design, it provides essential context: the names behind the standards, the voices behind the best practices, and the humans behind the technologies they're learning to master.
