Abstract

This comprehensive handbook, written by a practising web design and teacher, guides aspiring designers through the essential disciplines of modern web design, from foundational principles to professional practice. Beginning with an introduction to the inclusive web philosophy, the book establishes a workflow foundation covering file organisation, collaboration tools, and team feedback processes. Readers then explore classic design principles that underpin effective visual communication, learning why thoughtful design matters and how to apply time-tested approaches. The core visual chapters address typography—from combining typefaces to the nuances of setting type for screens—followed by an in-depth look at colour theory, including perception, accessible colour use, and practical scheme design. The layout chapter tackles responsive web design with a mobile-first methodology, while the visuals chapter covers file formats, image optimisation, vector graphics, and icon design for the web. A substantial chapter on design psychology introduces Gestalt principles and cognitive heuristics that inform user-centred design decisions. Brand design follows, explaining how to develop style guides, prototypes, and comprehensive brand systems. The handbook places particular emphasis on inclusive design, exploring accessibility, user experience, and interface design that serves all users. Practical guidance continues with chapters on presenting design rationale effectively and creating compelling design portfolios to showcase work professionally. Throughout, step-by-step tutorials and practice projects encourage learning by doing, while curated resources support progressive skill development in HTML and CSS. Written for both self-directed learners and master's level students, this handbook bridges design theory with hands-on application, drawing on decades of web standards evolution and contemporary best practices. An appendix provides extensive references covering content strategy, accessibility guidelines, coding resources, and legal considerations for practising designers.
