Abstract

This chapter explores how inclusivity and mutual development can be fostered in higher education through Exploratory Practice (EP), a form of practitioner research that positions both teachers and learners as co-investigators of their classroom experience. Drawing on a collaborative inquiry between a university lecturer and an undergraduate student in an Italian language class, the chapter examines how shared “puzzling”, the formulation of open-ended “why” questions, can generate reflective understanding of teaching and learning processes. Anchored in narrative inquiry, the project demonstrates how storytelling becomes a means of tracing connections between cognition, emotion, and classroom experience, allowing both teacher and learner to question assumptions about ability, time, and progress. By integrating inquiry into regular coursework rather than adding extra workload, the project advances an inclusive and sustainable model of professional and academic growth. The findings highlight how mutual reflection and dialogue can transform institutional constraints into opportunities for ethical, empathetic, and humanised pedagogy, showing that inclusivity in higher education is best achieved through collaborative, relational engagement within everyday classroom life.
