Abstract
This analysis explores two films - Margarethe von Trotta’s Die bleierne Zeit [The Leaden Times] (1981) and Andres Veiel’s Wer, wenn nicht wir [If Not Us, Who?] (2011). These films are examined as representative of changing attitudes towards the terrorist activity of the First Generation of the Rote Armee Faktion [Red Army Faction or RAF] (1970-77) in post-war West Germany during the 1970s. Both films focus on the dynamics of the terrorist group, and yet, the varying distance from the events of the RAF themselves offer alternative interpretations and suggest a changing collective memory.
