Abstract
Formative and summative assessments are traditionally viewed as dichotomous, despite evidence that they can be integrated to positively impact students’ learning. Language e-portfolios, which bridge formative and summative assessment, highlight two key aspects of formative assessment: assessment for learning (AfL) and assessment as learning (AaL). In AfL, teachers monitor learners’ progress over time to inform classroom planning, activities, and implementation. In AaL, learners are placed at the centre of the learning process, fostering self-awareness, goal-setting, responsibility for learning, autonomy, and cultural literacy.
This presentation reports on an enquiry-led methodology that integrates summative and formative assessment through a language e-portfolio in a UK higher education context. The research enquiry sought to blur the boundaries between classroom activities and assessment so that assessment itself became a learning experience. It involved both learners and the teacher, and employed a summative tool (Moodle Quiz) to harness the potential of dialogical feedback and self-reflection. The presentation outlines the enquiry process and considers the benefits and challenges of a language e-portfolio in terms of reliability, validity, fairness, and the promotion of a more creative, agentive role for learners in the co-construction of knowledge in the classroom.
