Abstract

This is a publication of the papers presented at the University of Greenwich 2022 Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences PhD Symposium.

"A misfit… describes an incongruent relationship between two things: a square peg in a round hole… The discrepancy between body and world, between that which is expected and that which is, produces fits and misfits.” Rosemarie Garland-Thomson

The Faculty of Liberal Arts & Sciences (FLAS) PhD Symposium 2022, in conjunction with the Drama, Theatre and Performance (DTP) research group, hosted by the University of Greenwich, and with the partnership of Concordia University’s Technoculture, Art and Games (TAG) interdisciplinary centre would like to invite immersive and participatory performance practitioners, designers, scholars, writers, producers, devisers, filmmakers and other interested parties who find themselves embracing the term “misfit” due to race, sex, gender, migrant background, and/or (dis)ability to discuss their political, social and cultural perspectives in relation to art and their practice.

In addition to a traditional call for papers, we also strongly encourage applicants from related practice as research areas for workshops and/or performances in theatre, dance, performance art, live art, digital art, games and other socially engaged practices. Additionally, PhD researchers at any stage are encouraged to submit their work.

Topics of interest within these themes of queerness, migrant background, (dis)ability and other misfit identities include:

• Participatory practices as a way of engagement with marginalised communities
• Foreign Bodies: Social, political, and gender representations within the arts
• Cultural, ethnic, and economic divisions through art practices
• Translating culture and ritual to a diverse audience through live and intimate encounters
• Decentering the immersive scene: who is performing and who is it for
• Human bodies performing in the digital world
