Abstract

Linguistic and visual signs are the focus of this chapter. An analysis of a selection of extracts from subtitled and dubbed English-French versions of three films, Smoke, Blue in the Face and The Piano will be used to explore the complex relationship between visual signs, language and translation. This study will also examine the interaction between picture composition, sequencing and the subtitled and dubbed interpretations. Film techniques play an essential role in the meaning of a sequence and the extracts selected for analysis will demonstrate their function.
