Abstract

This chapter describes how climate action – demonstrations that occupy streets, squares, and even highways – draw connections between landscapes impacted by global warming and public spaces of protest. Building on a combination of fieldwork and critical analysis, the chapter maps a conceptual framework where processes of landscapes (as more-than-human entities) and practices of making public space (as socio-spatial constructions) are connected through direct action (and inaction). The chapter outlines definitions of public space and landscape, recognizing frictions between historic Western European approaches to landscape that undermine more open, accessible, and democratic spaces. Advancing the concept of post-landscape, the research reveals how transnational public spaces can be claimed and represented by adopting techniques of planetary landscapes. This reciprocity between landscape and public space highlights that traditional bounded definitions and spaces of both landscapes and publics can be reframed through an emphasis on processes and practices of continual remaking.
