This paper investigates the adaptation for the screen of the short story by du Maurier, Don’t Look Now (1971), considering both the screenplay by Scott and Bryant (1973) and the film directed by Roeg (1973). It focuses in particular on the scriptwriters’ and director’s adaptation of the short story’s narrative voice, examining the ways in which screenplay and film each effect both a translation from one medium into another and a reimagining of an original authorial vision by another author or authors. I will consider the extent to which these two aspects can be defined as distinct or inseparable processes.
