Abstract

This research explores live performance practices with a focus on monolithic sound structures, particularly examining the use of immersive, room-filling bass frequencies and their impact on audience perception and experience. Characterised by dense, overwhelming soundscapes, these performances challenge traditional listening by eliciting immediate, visceral reactions from audiences. While the intensity of the sound may evoke parallels to the harsh noise scene, my work as Dushume consistently demonstrates nuanced variation within seemingly monolithic structures. This exploration reveals how such experimental sound is, in fact, malleable, unstable, and subject to fluctuation. Employing a minimal equipment setup, Dushume's precise sound manipulation contrasts with the chaotic forces generated during performances. This research situates my aesthetic approach within the broader context of experimental sound art practices, highlighting how the methodology engages with concepts of sonic instability and the fluid relationship between performer, sound, and audience. By contributing to a deeper understanding of how noise and experimental sound performance can subvert traditional expectations, this study highlights the potential for engaging listeners in dynamic, evolving auditory experiences.
