Abstract

The experimental sound and deep bass installation, "Gaumukh/ Cow’s Mouth", emerges from an in-depth exploration of an 18th-century document titled “Diary kept by an officer serving in India under one Colonel Morgan,” part of the Copped Hall collection at the Essex Record Office. Inspired by a specific excerpt detailing a journey through Northern India on a budgerow and the significance of the Gangotri glacier, known as Gaumukh or the "Cow’s Mouth," this installation engages with themes of historical connection and colonial legacy.

"Gaumukh/ Cow’s Mouth" utilises harsh bass and deep noise to evoke the mood and environment described in the diary, reflecting both the physical and metaphorical journey of the officer. The installation features an array of experimental sounds, including murmurs, howls, and callous, harsh bass, to create a sonic parallel to the slow-moving budgerow and the changing landscapes it traversed.

Through this auditory experience, the work addresses the Copped Hall estate's historical context, seeking to reconcile past colonial narratives with a forward-looking perspective that acknowledges and learns from historical injustices. By incorporating these elements, "Gaumukh/ Cow’s Mouth" contributes to a broader dialogue on how historical sites can confront and reinterpret their pasts as they move toward future relevance.
