Abstract
A child’s story is a from a child’s perspective and experiences of life as a ‘Windrush generation’ survivor. The story unravels from the 3-week voyage aboard the SS Ascania from Kingston Harbour, Jamaica to Southampton, UK in November 1964. Interviews conducted with a purposeful sample of women and children who had travelled on the SS Ascania, highlights the untold stories aboard the ship. Hubert Ellis’s, role in bringing the family to the UK at one time is celebrated in an interview conducted by Jamaican TV documentary ‘Hill an Gully Ride.’
Beryl Ellis, the matriarch provides the context for the immigrant journey. Through oral traditions, she provides the ‘child’ with personal histories which continue to be passed down through the generations.
A child’s story captures challenges faced and strategies used to navigate new beginnings in a strange land.
