Abstract
"It’s all right. I came back."
Found 35mm slides, dual slide projectors, rotating mirrored shutter, microcontroller with spectral sensors, microphones, effect pedals and speakers. Hobbs has taken found/archival slides from his deceased father’s sales pitches (delivered while he worked at General Electric’s lighting division for over 50 years) and created a type of homage-cum-séance kinetic sculpture, attempting to harnesses and repurpose the energy embodied within the materials. The title of the work refers to the opening lines spoken by Willy Loman from Arthur Miller’s play, Death of a Salesman. For this work, Hobbs collaborated with TechResort in Eastbourne, UK to develop light sensors which transform colour/spectral waves into sounds which are transformed into sound. The work can be displayed as an infinitely looping installation or performed live. Documentation from Sound/Image 2021, Stephen Lawrence Gallery, London, UK
