In the mid-1970s architectural historian Manfredo Tafuri puts forward the idea of the historical ‘project’ as an open discursive construct that reactivates past events in its reading of the present.
History is redefined as a shifting and complex plurality rather than a given monolithic and comprehensive whole, and as an autonomous project independent from architectural practice. This paper analyzes the impact and relevance of Tafuri’s ‘project’ on contemporary architectural theory, from the crisis of languages and of the role of
representation, to the impact of political and feminist discourses, to a renewed interest in the specificity and possibilities of materiality in
architecture. The paper looks beyond the political urgency that characterizes Tafuri’s writings of the 1960s and 70s, to focus on the relevance of ‘material’ history in the making of his historical ‘project’, and argues that such approach may offer a way to critically read current material practices in architecture
