Abstract

Film Soundtrack - 35mm Optical Sound, Stereo – [Dir. David Leister]

The greatest British film company emblematically deconstructed.

This film has its origins in the live performances of the (I)MAGESOUND(S) programme. David Leister was invited as a guest to create a live performance to which a live soundtrack was improvised.

After the event it was suggested that we make a fixed version of the film for screening elsewhere. Thus a new soundtrack was composed with additional recordings. The final soundtrack focusses upon the subject of the film, the iconic Gong of the Rank Organisation. Close up Tam Tam recordings seek to highlight and evoke the materiality of this gong, filtered and layered to reflect the visual manipulation and to create an enveloping sonic experience that seeks to draw the audience into the screen, collapsing audiovisual space.

This work was premiered at the 2019 BFI London Film Festival, in the Experimenta – Double Vision Programme.
