Abstract

This is the first real overview of the nineteenth-century British trade and professional press ever attempted. An 11,000 word chapter that relies on a database with thousands of datapoints that will be freely published on BLT19.co.uk to coincide with the publication of the volume the chapter is part of, it considers primarily the methodological and theoretical issues such an undertaking involves before commenting on the various quantitative findings regarding domains of knowledge, trade and profession, places of publication and chronology.
