Abstract
“Desiring therefore to present myself with some proof of my devotion towards you, I have found that the possession I value above all is the knowledge of the actions of great men. This knowledge has been acquired by long experience in contemporary affairs, and a continual study of history.”
The extract from Machiavelli’s introduction to The Prince encapsulates perfectly my role as a teacher educator, deeply committed to the sector and the teachers I train, determined to use the best of what has been thought and said to instruct and shape teachers’ minds and souls, as I set on the way to becoming the new professionals of education.
This chapter will look at how we, the academics, the teacher educators, work behind the scenes, crafting our Trojan horses. In this chapter I cast myself and fellow teacher educators as Machiavelli at the gates of Troy, preparing a host of princes to infiltrate the city, building them up as vessels of resistance to power. As a teacher educator and an academic I often find myself preparing my students not only for what awaits them in the classroom but with a view to how as professionals they may be radical agents for change. For if education is not about transformation it is not education. And this is not more so than for further Education.
