Abstract
This chapter joins the debate about the construction of collective memory of Wroclaw’s past by using a case study one of the European Capital of Culture 2016 major projects, Bridge Builders. The Bridge Builders project provides an insight into the way in which the city’s history is approached by young people, and how this perception and engagement with identity is transformed during the creative process. The chapter challenges arguments that Wroclaw has been reconciled with its complex past, and argues that persistent silences and avoidances of the profound rupture which happened in 1945 are linked to the ongoing contestation of notions of Polish national identity. This ethnographic study highlights pedagogical and transformative potential of community arts projects.
