Abstract
Those of you involved in Primary Mathematics Education are unlikely to have missed the furore recently surrounding Singapore and Shanghai approaches to mathematics. So what's it all about, and could we actually learn anything which might improve our own teaching and learning in Primary Mathematics. There is no denying that some areas of South East Asia do much better than us in international mathematics tests. Tests, including TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) and PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) appear to demonstrate that England is falling woefully behind, while Shanghai and Singapore consistently hold top ranking positions. But what are they doing that is so different to us and what part does national culture play in influencing classroom practices?
