Abstract

Mention of aesthetics in the context of dementia and neighbourhoods might pre-empt thoughts about the appearance of built environments; good and bad examples of dementia-friendly architecture or design; or perhaps discussion about how the appearance of streets and public places might invite or exclude, enable or disable engagement, and interaction in the public realm. All these things are important, as much work on Dementia Inclusive Communities attests to, but they are not the only ways of thinking about how ‘neighbourhood aesthetics’ might matter. Taking inspiration from writing on the aesthetics of care and everyday aesthetics, this chapter offers an exploratory account of how we might understand the relationality that connects people living with dementia to other people and places. This chapter presents five illustrative cases from material collected during a five-year longitudinal study of the lived experience of neighbourhoods for people living with dementia and reflect on (1) what routine and habitual practices, interactions, and engagements with neighbourhoods can reveal about the meaning of neighbourhoods in the lives of people living with dementia and (2) how attending to the emplaced aesthetics of everyday life for people living with dementia might lead to more care-full neighbourhoods for everyone.
