Abstract

This project explores how students envision the future of higher education in the context of Generative AI (GenAI), and how institutions should develop future proof AI literacy. While GenAI offers opportunities for productivity, accessibility, and creativity, students express concerns about declining human cognition, widening inequalities, and threats to academic integrity. Using four student led foresight and co creation workshops, the study examines students’ imagined futures, essential skills, and approaches to learning with AI. Findings highlight a central tension between access and integrity: students envision ideal futures where universal access combines with strong ethical safeguards, while unequal access or low integrity risks deepening inequality or undermining trust. Students identify five key skill domains - AI specific, digital, cognitive, social, and emotional - and advocate applied practice, compulsory introductory AI education, module embedded AI tools, and accreditation pathways. The project will produce toolkits and policy recommendations to support equitable, reflective, and future focused GenAI use in higher education.
