Abstract

Using a live case study creates an environment where learners have agency in their own building of knowledge in sustainability, which can help them reinforce their understanding of how everyone has a role to play in saving the planet. Teaching sustainability as a theme within a capstone project can help them understand that accountants need to think beyond pure financials and critically analyse decisions and strategies to incorporate a balance of profit, people and planet. This chapter examines how using a live case study effectively improved not only the students’ ability to understand and critically evaluate climate change issues and risks in the business environment, developing the knowledge required to link strategy and financial and non-financial information on climate change, but also enhanced students’ awareness of the risks associated with climate change.
