Abstract

Not all housing learning takes place within the classroom. Indeed, there is pedagogical evidence that the actual process of walking and immersion is highly beneficial to the very ways in which students – as well as their lecturers – engage with and develop knowledge. We were also keen to explore how we might be able to factor in practice type thinking about an area, when work-based placements have largely become a thing of the past and other experiential learning has proven challenging. We have trialled walking tours for housing students, initially with a map and written instructions on paper and latterly using the GeoTourist app, promoting engagement with environments in new and inspiring ways. But the learning goes beyond that. With our interests in history of housing and public health, as well as drawing from relevant local archives, we created three walking tours receiving excellent feedback from our students (Hendon and Stewart, in press). Most recently, we worked with international masters level students to take a fresh approach and to co-create a walking app on Greenwich’s housing and public health that we hoped could be used amongst our students and the wider community. This optional learning activity proved a great success, with students immersing themselves in the local environment, taking photographs and exploring the links between housing, environment and health and writing this up succinctly and making audio recordings for the app. Beyond the new knowledge gained, students also developed multiple new skills in this innovative co-creation and clearly enjoyed the experience.
