Abstract

This study investigates knowledge transfer processes in franchised partnerships between UK and Asian universities. Guided by a theoretical framework on inter-organisational knowledge transfer from the business sector, the study employs data from semi-structured interviews and observational insights from both home and host institutions. Thematic analysis of the data reveals that explicit forms of academic and organizational knowledge facilitate knowledge transfer at host institutions. It also confirms the transfer of tacit knowledge is hindered by organizational and cultural distance. However, professional knowledge remains largely overlooked in transnational education (TNE) collaborations. Additionally, partner institutions’ characteristics influence the effectiveness of knowledge transfer. While knowledge transfer between UK universities and their overseas partners shares similarities with other industries, this study identifies distinctive features of the higher education sector. These findings offer valuable insights for managers and policymakers involved in the internationalization of higher education.
