Abstract

This chapter introduces multiple and mixed methods research as a strategy for heterodox economics, challenging the dominance of mono-method approaches in mainstream economics. It explains how combining qualitative and quantitative methods enhances explanatory power, addresses methodological limitations, and aligns with critical realist ontology. The chapter reviews the evolution of mixed methods, principles of triangulation, and typologies of research design, including convergent, sequential, and advanced designs. It highlights the importance of integration, diagramming, and software tools for effective implementation, and discusses validity and ethical considerations. By enabling richer, context-sensitive analysis, mixed methods research supports heterodox goals of interdisciplinarity, plurality, and engagement with real-world complexity. The chapter concludes that rigorous design and integration of methods are essential for generating robust, transformative insights into economic phenomena.
