Abstract

This chapter introduces the rationale and scope of heterodox research methods in economics, contrasting them with the methodological gatekeeping of orthodox economics. It critiques the dominance of econometrics and formal modeling, arguing that these approaches obscure social context and power relations. The chapter outlines the heterodox commitment to methodological pluralism, critical realism, and grounded theory as foundations for rigorous, context-sensitive inquiry. It reviews the evolution of heterodox methodological debates, highlighting the integration of qualitative, historical, and quantitative approaches within a critical realist framework. Emphasis is placed on the challenges of institutional dominance by orthodoxy and the need for structured training in alternative methods. The chapter concludes by situating the Handbook as a resource for expanding high-quality heterodox research through interdisciplinary engagement and mixed-method strategies.
