Abstract

This is a chapter for the “Cambridge Handbook of Temporality in Language” focusing on the category known as “grammatical aspect”. Drawing from empirical evidence across languages and current consensual views, the chapter contributes a clear view about the status of the category in the inventory of elements of human languages, the form-meaning relations established by it, the window it is into different developmental pathways and the methodological heuristic tools to investigate it, with references to more than 15 languages.
