The Diagonal (Leave Me Alone Now).
[Artefact]
Abstract
The Diagonal (Leave Me Alone Now) is a set of six prints comprising six sections of the twentieth-century British painter Euan Uglow’s work The Diagonal (1971-77) which have been reworked with a text written by J C Kristensen against the painting, articulating the voice of the nude woman who is the subject of the work.
The text is a meditation on her form and its meaning from her position as object, in the context of her presentation for the consuming eye of the painter and the gaze of the viewer. Through combining her words with her image, The Diagonal (Leave Me Alone Now) gives voice to representation, challenging the authority of depicting to become de-picturing.
This work is currently a work-in-progress, with an aim to make its final form in July 2025, for exhibition later this year. Venue and date to be confirmed.
