Abstract

This paper began with a serendipitous encounter on the London embankment between ‘Cleopatra’s Needle’ and the River Thames. This encounter led us to link two cities that we work in, London and Cairo. The river Thames cuts a section through London and the obelisk a section through time. Using 3D point cloud models of London and edited film of Cairo we draw views through the two Cities, each of which has a specific aesthetic. The filmic section through Cairo describes a political, spatial, and stylistic act at City scale. The sections of London are less politically dramatic, but the politics are nevertheless in evidence. We use shadow models to look closely at the two cities and are interested in the deviant or mischievous nature of data in point clouds and of frames in film. We look at three sites - a section through Cairo from the River Nile to the satellite city of 6th October on the edge of the desert. At the data compression and erosion of Cleopatra’s needle on the Thames, and the Thames as a section through London. And further downstream on the Thames, sections of Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site.
