Abstract
This chapter considers the story of a young woman named Maryam who is of Pakistani origin and has had her life devastated as a result of the floods that have been taking place regularly since 2022 in her hometown in Pakistan. Maryam reached the United Kingdom in 2040 and claimed asylum. However, her asylum application was rejected even though the newly expanded Refugee Convention of 2036 made some reference to ‘climate emergencies’. This chapter examines the work that is being done to acknowledge the presence of ‘climate refugees’ and argues that individuals like Maryam will encounter a very hostile immigration environment in the future, which explains why Maryam's asylum application was rejected.
