Abstract

A clearer picture is beginning to emerge of how the Fukushima disaster will affect the prospects for nuclear power in the West. For some countries the damage is terminal and nuclear power is off the agenda for the foreseeable future. The nuclear industry’s main hope for Europe hangs on them being successful in UK. If the UK government can agree a deal with Electricité de France (EDF) that does not run foul of European Union State Aids rules, this will be seen as a model to follow by several other countries, such as Poland, Czech Republic and France.
