Abstract

The article traces the literary origins of the first novel that the Victorian popular writer Ouida (Marie Louise Rame) wrote on her move to Italy in 1871. I show how *Pascarel*, a novel much praised throughout the later nineteenth century for its lyrical descriptions of Italy, has its literary roots in two French works famous for their depictions of women artists, George Sand's *Consuelo* and Madamde de Stael's *Corinne*. The novel regenders these models to fit with 1860s ideas about revolutionary Italy. This regendering of sources combined with a previously unknown publication avenue (the Italian nationalist periodical the *Nuova Antologia*) generated a novel that politicises and masculinises the aesthetic for Italian nationalist ends.
