This is the first critical edition of Ouida's last completed full-length novel, a political and social satire of Britain in the 1890s, particularly concerned with the revenge of the colonised on the coloniser.
Ouida (birth name: Maria Louise Ramé) was a particularly vocal opponent of the radical New Woman despite creating numerous example of the type during her prolific writing career and, as an assertive independent single woman, in many ways acting as one herself. The Massarenes centres on the Irish Massarene family and their entrance into the highest echelons of Society. William Massarene’s daughter, Katherine, rejects what she regards as ill-gotten gains, however, and, a true "Individualist", follows her own path. The work is a summa of the nineteenth century, the novel reworks plots from Trollope, Ouida herslef, Jane Austen and many others.
