Abstract

The paper synthesizes the knowledge about the information technologies (ITs) by outlining of the functionalities and features of them, and reflecting on the strategic and operational opportunities and challenges they pose to a retail supply chain (SC). The research is developed from the literature on the IT development and applications. It is acknowledged that implementations of the ITs across SC and their integration will enhance the overall SC performance in terms of cost, response efficiency and customer satisfaction level, while the challenges have to be addressed, including the high setup cost, the complexity of implementation, and the privacy and security issues. Better understanding of the opportunities and challenges will help participants in the retail SC transform challenges into opportunities. Drawn upon the secondary resources, a comparison is conducted to compare the deployment of ITs for the two UK retailers (Tesco and Asda).
