Abstract
Poverty and income inequality are challenges that have bedevilled developing countries for over the years. This has taken place despite significant economic growths in these countries. Many countries the world over have adopted financial inclusion as a tool to alleviate poverty and income inequality. This chapter explores the concepts of financial inclusion, poverty and income inequality and tries to bring a clearer understanding of such terms as they apply in four Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, namely Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The chapter goes further to review the existing body of literature on financial inclusion as a strategy to alleviate poverty and income inequality. Insights are drawn from these selected SADC countries in terms of financial inclusion, poverty, income inequality and related research. The chapter identifies gaps in the existing body of literature and makes recommendations on what needs to be done in terms of policy and practice, and future research.
