Abstract
This report presents a study that was carried out with young ESOL learners in an inner-city London Further Education college. The aim was to understand how learners gained and acted on information on their choice of study. This study found that parents’ level of education plays a key role in influencing students’ perceptions of their academic ability. We also found that students with responsibilities are more confident in their college studies. Student levels of confidence was also a factor in whether student's sought advice from institutional sources, of which their tutor was most important.
